Jodogahama beach — white rhyolite rock formations with clear blue-green water — is one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes in the Tohoku region, and it actually draws tourist traffic. Miyako has around 50,000 people, enough to have a real commercial district, restaurants, and some bar life. The Sanriku Railway line terminus here makes it a hub for the coastal circuit. Enough city to function, and the coast gives you a genuine talking point.
