Nanao sits on Nanao Bay — one of the calmest deepwater bays on the Sea of Japan — and was historically the commercial hub of the Noto Peninsula. It still functions as the main service city for Noto residents: shopping, hospital, government. The Seihakusai festival in July is one of the most authentic local matsuri in Ishikawa, and the bay seafood (particularly yellowtail) is excellent. For a foreign man who shows up during festival season with some Japanese ability, there's a real local social layer to access.
