Tatsuno
8.5
Mid score (6-8)
Tatsuno is known for two things: Higashimaru soy sauce, one of Japan's major brands, is headquartered here, and the preserved castle town streets earned it the local nickname 'Harima's little Kyoto.' The old merchant quarter around the castle ruin is genuinely atmospheric and the city has invested in maintaining its historical character rather than letting it decay. Population is small at around 75,000 and the social scene is correspondingly thin, but Tatsuno has more visible local pride and character than most small Hyogo cities. Worth a stop; not a social destination.
