Takarazuka has been home to the all-female Takarazuka Revue theater company since 1914, staging elaborate musicals where female performers play all roles including male leads. The Grand Theater anchors the city's commercial district, and the fan culture (called Takarasiennes) is almost exclusively women and girls. As a residential city it's prosperous and quiet — the kind of place Osaka executives move their families — but as a social environment for an outsider man it's a conspicuously poor fit.
