Shisō is a mountain city in western Hyogo formed by merging four small towns in 2005. It's known for locally branded sugi cedar and hinoki cypress forestry, and the mountains have hiking and camping infrastructure. Population is around 35,000 spread across a large rural area with no concentrated urban core. This is one of the more isolated places in Hyogo — two hours from Kobe without a direct express route — and there is nothing here that would attract or retain an outsider beyond a specific outdoor interest.
