Sasayama

Lower score (below 6)
Tanba Sasayama is a well-preserved castle town in central Hyogo known for kuromame (premium black soybeans used in New Year dishes) and botan nabe (wild boar hot pot), with atmospheric merchant-town streets that draw domestic day-trippers from Kobe and Osaka. The historical atmosphere is genuine and not manufactured. But the population of around 40,000 skews old, the evening options are minimal, and the weekend visitors are almost entirely domestic couples doing the castle town itinerary. A foreign man gets some looks and maybe a conversation here, but the social returns don't justify the detour from Kobe.
