Itami
8.4
Mid score (6-8)
Itami is defined by its airport — Osaka/Itami (ITM) was Japan's primary western gateway until Kansai International opened in 1994, and the demotion shows in the city's slightly past-its-peak feel. The airport still runs domestic routes and the surrounding city has the transient functional atmosphere of an airport town that got overtaken by events. Itami sake was Japan's most famous in the Edo period before the Nada district took over, and a few sake breweries still operate, but that prestige doesn't translate socially. Adequate for a transit night, not worth engineering a stay around.
