Akō
7.2
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Akō is where the 47 Ronin story took place — Lord Asano's domain in 1701, and the city still holds a samurai procession every December and has a well-maintained castle ruin. The old salt fields along the Ako coast were historically among Japan's most productive, and the salt merchant quarter has some atmospheric preserved streets. The city is small at about 47,000 and conservative, with an older population skew and thin nightlife. Historical character gives it more personality than most small Hyogo cities, but social opportunity for an outsider is limited.
