Yoichi

Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Yoichi is the Nikka Whisky town — Masataka Taketsuru (the 'father of Japanese whisky') founded the Yoichi Distillery here in 1934, choosing the location for its climate similarity to Scotland, and the distillery is now one of Japan's most visited whisky tourism sites, drawing both domestic enthusiasts and international whisky tourists. The surrounding hills also produce apples and wine grapes, and Yoichi is considered a good wine production area by Hokkaido standards. At around 19,000 people the town has some nightlife and is reachable from Sapporo in about an hour by train. The whisky tourism brings international visitors and the town's food and hospitality infrastructure reflects this. Not a social destination by itself but one of the better small-town stops in Hokkaido.
