Shosanbetsu is one of the smallest and most isolated villages in Hokkaido at around 1,200 people on the Rumoi coast. The village has a small observatory and some geological features on the coast. No social infrastructure at all — this is a marginal fishing community at the edge of habitation on the northwestern coast.
