Shari
8.6
Lower score (below 6)
Shari is the gateway town to the Shiretoko Peninsula — the UNESCO World Heritage coast where brown bears walk the shoreline and salmon choke the rivers in autumn. The town of around 12,000 services the outdoor tourism to Shiretoko and has hospitality infrastructure scaled for that purpose. The tourist circuit brings some social activity in summer but the resident community is agricultural and conservative Okhotsk. A useful staging point for the World Heritage area; not a destination in its own right.
