Rishiri
7.6
Lower score (below 6)
Rishiri Island rises from the sea as a near-perfect volcanic cone (Mt. Rishiri at 1,721m) visible from Wakkanai on clear days and is one of the most dramatic island silhouettes in Japan. The Rishiri konbu (kelp) harvested here is the premium grade used by top-tier Japanese restaurants for dashi stock. The island's two towns together have around 5,500 residents, mostly fishing families. Ferry-dependent and extremely remote. Stunning landscape; no social infrastructure for a foreign man.
