Rebun Island is accessible only by ferry from Wakkanai (about 2 hours) and is known as the 'Island of Flowers' for its alpine wildflower display in July — over 300 plant species grow here, including many that only exist at high altitude on the mainland but thrive at sea level on Rebun due to the cold Okhotsk currents. The population of around 3,000 is almost entirely fishing families and seasonal tourism workers. The island social environment is completely closed except during the brief summer flower season when hikers pass through. Spectacular natural experience; zero social infrastructure.
