Rausu
7.5
Lower score (below 6)
Rausu sits on the eastern coast of the Shiretoko Peninsula — one of Japan's UNESCO World Heritage sites — and the town of around 5,000 is one of the most dramatic fishing communities in Japan, where white-tailed eagles and Steller's sea eagles descend on the harbor in winter to feed on discarded fish, and drift ice pushes against the shore from January through March. The seafood quality here (Rausu konbu kelp, salmon, sea urchin) is considered premium even within Hokkaido. The community is tough, weather-isolated fishing families with essentially no history of foreign visitor social interaction. Come for the wildlife and the seafood; the town itself has nothing socially for an outsider.
