Otaru
7.1
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Otaru's restored Meiji-era canal and warehouse district is one of the most photographed scenes in Hokkaido, and the glasswork and music box shops that line Sakaimachi-dori draw heavy domestic tourist traffic, particularly romantic couples from Sapporo 40 minutes away by express train. The Sushiya-dori (Sushi Street) is a legitimate destination — Otaru is considered one of the best sushi cities in Japan and the quality is real given direct port access to Sea of Japan seafood. The resident population at around 110,000 is aging and the young leave for Sapporo, which means the dating pool is thin among women who actually live here. Worth a serious day or two for the food and atmosphere; not a place to base yourself for social outcomes.
