Okushiri Island in the Sea of Japan west of Hokkaido was struck by the 1993 Hokkaido Nansei Earthquake and resulting tsunami — 230 people died on the island in a community of around 4,000, and the rebuilt infrastructure is noticeably newer than the population warrants. The island is reached by ferry from Setana or by small plane. The fishing community is tight-knit and deeply affected by the 1993 disaster in ways still visible in how they talk about their community. A genuinely isolated island with no social upside for a foreign man.
