Niikappu is a Hidaka coast town of around 5,000 in the middle of Hokkaido's Thoroughbred horse breeding belt. The Niikappu Stud Farm and other breeding operations in the area produce a significant share of Japan's racing bloodstock. The horse industry is conducted between insiders and doesn't create openness to outsiders — the farming families and stable hands form a closed community. Nothing here for a foreign man outside of work in the horse industry.
