Kuriyama is a Sorachi town of around 13,000 in the foothills between Sapporo and Yūbari. The area has some legacy connection to Hokkaido sake culture (the Sorachi region had several breweries), and the town is a farming and light-industry community. The former coal economy's departure hollowed out much of the commercial base. Sapporo is reachable but the town itself has nothing to offer socially.
