Ikeda
7.7
Lower score (below 6)
Ikeda is the Tokachi wine town — the municipal government started a winery in 1963 as an economic development project using locally-grown grapes, and Ikeda Wine Castle (a mock-medieval château built into a hillside) was the first successful commercial winery in Hokkaido. The wine tourism is real but small-scale, and the castle draws curious day-trippers from Obihiro. At around 6,500 people the town's social scene is extremely limited. The wine is genuinely decent; the social environment is a small agricultural town that happens to have a castle-shaped winery on a hill.
