Hokuto was created by the 2006 merger of several Oshima peninsula towns and sits close to Hakodate as its northern hinterland, covering the flatlands up toward the mountains. The Shinkansen extension to Hokkaido put Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station here — the northern terminus of the Hokkaido Shinkansen — making it a transit node. At 46,000 people it has a real if modest commercial base. Trappist monastery (Trappist Abbey of Our Lady of Consolation, founded 1902 by French monks) produces famous butter and cookies still sold in train station shops. The town benefits from Hakodate proximity and the Shinkansen infrastructure but doesn't have much of its own social scene.
