Esashi in Oshima was one of Hokkaido's wealthiest towns during the 19th century herring boom — the nishin goten (herring mansions), ornate wooden buildings built by fishing merchants, still stand and give the town a historical character unusual for Hokkaido. The herring disappeared and the wealth went with it, leaving a town of around 9,000 that trades on heritage tourism and a small fishing fleet. The historical buildings are genuinely interesting; the social environment is a small, aging coastal community with nothing for an outsider to plug into.
