Biratori
7.5
Lower score (below 6)
Biratori is the cultural center of Ainu heritage in the Hidaka region — the Nibutani area has the Kayano Shigeru Nibutani Ainu Museum, named after the first Ainu person elected to the National Diet (in 1994). The Ainu cultural presence is genuine and the landscape along the Saru River is striking. At under 5,000 people this is still a rural community and the social dynamic is exactly what you'd expect from a small, culturally distinct farming and forestry town. Worth visiting for the Ainu context; not a social destination.
