Ashibetsu's identity is bound up entirely with coal — the Sorachi coalfield made this city, and the mine closures dismantled it. The Ashibetsu Coal Mining History Museum is one of the few active sites in town. Population has dropped to around 14,000 from a postwar peak of over 70,000, and the economic trauma of that collapse is visible in the built environment. Social life is minimal and the community has the inward, survival-mode character that long-declining resource towns develop. No social upside for a foreign man.
