Akabira was a thriving coal city in the Sorachi coalfield — at peak it had 70,000 residents and a full urban commercial strip. Today the population is around 9,000 and the city has the gutted, faded quality of a place that peaked fifty years ago and hasn't found a replacement industry. The downtown shutterstock of closed pachinko halls and empty storefronts tells the story. There is nothing here for a foreign man socially, and the community is tight-knit in the defensive way of places that have been in long decline.
