Kiryu's best days economically are behind it — the silk industry that built the city is essentially gone and the manufacturing economy that replaced it has been eroding for decades. That economic decline means a lot of the young population has left for Tokyo and Takasaki, and the social scene is thinner than the city's size would historically suggest. Still the best social environment in eastern Gunma and a real bar scene exists here, but you're working with a city that feels like it's slowly contracting.
