Minamisoma is home to the Soma Nomaoi, one of Japan's most spectacular festivals — hundreds of riders in full samurai armor competing in mounted archery and equestrian events over three days in late July. During festival week, Minamisoma draws national attention and the social energy is unlike anything else in Fukushima Prefecture. The Haramachi district maintained function through the nuclear crisis and has a real commercial base.
