Kotake
8.9
Lower score (below 6)
Kotake is a small town in the Kurate district with historical ties to coal mining in the Onga River basin. The coal industry collapse hit this area hard in the 1960s-70s, and the town never developed an alternative economic base of scale. The commercial center is minimal and aging, the population is older, and there's nothing resembling a social scene. Like much of the Kurate district, this is rural post-industrial Japan without the agricultural identity that makes some rural areas feel intentional.
