Katsuyama has the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum — one of the largest dinosaur museums in Asia — which is the only attraction in the prefecture that draws anything resembling significant visitor traffic from outside the region. Japanese families come here specifically for it, which means more outside contact and tourism infrastructure than the surrounding mountain towns offer. Very narrow lane, but the museum is genuinely impressive.

Katsuyama's entire modern identity runs through the dinosaur fossil discoveries made in the Kitadani formation in the 1980s and 90s. The museum is legitimately good, the local festival calendar includes a dinosaur theme, and the town has more visitor infrastructure than you'd expect from a city of 23,000 in the Fukui mountains. Outside the museum zone it's quiet and traditional.
