Eiheiji hosts one of the two head temples of Soto Zen Buddhism — founded by Dogen in 1244 and still functioning as a training monastery with around 200 monks in residence. International Zen practitioners and Buddhist pilgrims do make the trip, which creates the only outside-facing social context in the area. If you're arriving with any genuine interest in Zen practice, the temple draws a worldwide visitor base and the context is more open than anything else in rural Fukui.

Eiheiji is a temple town where the monastery defines everything — there's a tourist approach road with sesame tofu restaurants and cedar-wood souvenir shops, but the whole place exists to serve the temple. Buddhist pilgrims from across Japan and occasionally from overseas do come, giving it a slightly more varied visitor mix than a purely agricultural Fukui town.
