Noshiro is the second-largest city in Akita Prefecture and the commercial hub of the northwest. It has a real downtown, a small bar district, and enough population mass to generate some social life. The city has traditional crafts including the Noshiro cedar woodworking tradition, and it sits at the mouth of the Yoneshiro River which gives it some geographic character. More social infrastructure than anywhere else in Akita outside the prefectural capital.

Noshiro functions as a regional hub but it's still a mid-size Japanese city in decline — the population has been falling steadily. The foreign presence is very small. You'll find more options here than in rural Akita but it's not a city that rewards a long stay on its own merits. Useful as a base for the northwest coast and Shirakami.
