Happō
8.6
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Happō is on the Sea of Japan coast in the Yamamoto district, and it has one real card to play: proximity to the Shirakami-Sanchi beech forest and direct coastal access. The combination of mountains and coast in a very small area gives it scenery that actually draws Japanese domestic tourists. An outdoorsy foreigner who shows up here is genuinely rare and gets treated as such.
Mid score (6-8)
Small coastal town that benefits from its location near Shirakami but doesn't have much social infrastructure of its own. The tourist traffic is mostly Japanese day-trippers who don't stay. Good if you need somewhere quiet on the Sea of Japan coast, but the social upside is minimal.
Lower score (below 6)
Tiny coastal town with significant depopulation pressure. No nightlife, no English, no expat infrastructure. Even domestic Japanese tourists treat it as a day trip rather than a base. An outsider without specific outdoor goals has no reason to be here.
