Diyala province northeast of Baghdad was one of the most contested areas during the sectarian conflict years and ISIS's later campaign — Baquba, the capital, has been through enormous trauma. The province is still recovering and security conditions, while improved, are not stable enough to make it a realistic destination for social travel.

There is some agricultural economy around Baquba's orchards, but no meaningful foreign visitor presence or social infrastructure.
