Golestan province along the Caspian eastern coast is one of Iran's least-visited and most ethnically layered provinces — Turkmen, Kazakhs, Persians, and northern Khorasanis all have historical presence here, and Gonbad-e Kavus has a UNESCO-listed medieval tower that's genuinely extraordinary. The Turkmen areas near the Turkmenistan border have a Central Asian cultural texture you won't find anywhere else in Iran. Rare enough that a foreign man here gets treated as a genuine novelty.

Gorgan is a pleasant enough provincial capital with good access to the Golestan National Park forests, but the tourist infrastructure is minimal and social access requires language skills and contacts. The ethnic diversity of the province is interesting to observe but hard to penetrate as an outsider. A destination for the genuinely curious traveler.
