Meghalaya is one of India's genuinely matrilineal states — the Khasi and Jaintia communities pass property and surnames through the mother's line, women control household finances, and the social dynamic between men and women is measurably more equal than anywhere in mainland India. Shillong has a real music and arts scene, a large Christian population with Western cultural influences, and English as a first language for most educated residents. Foreign men land here with genuine social traction because the culture is already oriented toward equality and engagement. The Scotland of the East reputation isn't just about the rain.
