Southeast Sulawesi's Wakatobi archipelago is one of the most consistently praised dive destinations in the region — small, well-managed, and with a dive resort community that creates a genuinely collegial social environment among the handful of visitors there at any time. Kendari, the provincial capital, has seen real economic growth from the nickel industry and has a more active professional scene than its remote location would suggest. For a diver or marine enthusiast, Wakatobi has the added benefit of being uncrowded even during peak season.
