High score (8-10) · Your profile
Lombok is West Nusa Tenggara's main draw and it operates on a different social frequency from Bali — lower key, less developed, and with a surfing and outdoor culture that attracts a specific type of independent traveler that's easy to connect with. The Gili Islands off Lombok's northwest coast have a compact, sociable atmosphere where everyone who washes up tends to meet everyone else within a day or two. The Sasak people of Lombok are genuinely warm and the Islamic culture here is of the moderate, adat-infused variety that leaves room for social interaction.
Mid score (6-8)
Lombok is developing fast but still operates with a significant infrastructure gap compared to Bali — the roads outside Senggigi and Mataram are rough, power cuts happen, and the service economy outside tourist zones is underdeveloped. The social scene on the Gilis is highly seasonal and very backpacker-oriented, which works for some profiles and not for others. Mataram itself is a functional provincial capital without much social pull for a foreigner.
Lower score (below 6)
If you're coming to West Nusa Tenggara for anything other than the Gilis or Lombok surfing, the province doesn't have much to offer a foreign profile — Sumbawa to the east is deeply traditional, surf-focused in specific spots, and has zero general tourist infrastructure. The social conservatism increases significantly as you move away from the Lombok tourist corridor. Without a specific outdoor or surfing purpose, the return is low.
