Mendefera is the capital of the Debub region — formerly Adi Ugri under Italian administration — and is the most functional urban center in the south outside Asmara. It has a proper market, government offices, a hospital, guesthouses, and slightly more economic activity than surrounding subzones. The town has both Christian and Muslim communities which creates a marginally more varied social texture than purely Orthodox highland towns. Still deeply conservative by any international standard, but as a base for the southern region, it's the only real option.
