Qena City is the administrative capital of Qena Governorate with a South Valley University campus that injects some youth energy into what is otherwise a firmly conservative Upper Egyptian city. The Temple of Dendera, about 4km outside the city center, is a genuinely exceptional Ptolemaic temple to Hathor — one of the best-preserved in Egypt — but day-trippers come from Luxor for it, not by basing themselves in Qena. Hotels are basic, there's no nightlife, and as a foreign man you are a curiosity rather than a participant in any social scene. Use it as a one-night transit point if the logistics require it.
