Dayrut is one of the larger towns in Asyut Governorate and sits on the main Upper Egypt rail line, which gives it better connectivity than most of the district towns in the governorate. The town has a functioning commercial center and a history of textile and craft production that gave it slightly more trade exposure than purely agricultural towns. The Coptic community here is established and has maintained cultural institutions through periods of tension, which gives the town a degree of pluralistic character.
