The Giza city center proper — distinct from the pyramids district or the newer satellite cities — is Egypt's third largest urban area and has genuine commercial and educational infrastructure: Cairo University is here, there are actual restaurants and cafes along Pyramids Road and Mohandiseen adjacent areas, and the educated class is large enough that a foreign man with a real profile gets noticed positively. The Nile-facing strip has some of the better restaurants in greater Cairo. It's not as easy as parts of central Cairo but it's a real city with real social possibility.

The commercial streets are navigable, the university population is younger and more internationally aware, but the default social world is still family-oriented and male-dominated in public spaces. Works as a base if you're plugged into the Cairo University scene.
