Burjal-'Arab
8.2
High score (8-10) · Your profile
Burg el Arab is 45km west of Alexandria on the coast, best known as the site of Alexandria's international airport and the launch point for the North Coast resort corridor. In July and August, wealthy Cairene and Alexandrian families flood the beach resorts north of here, which creates a temporary but real social environment where a foreign man stands out positively. Off-season it's a mid-sized city with an airport and very little else going on.
Mid score (6-8)
A functional city with its own identity separate from Alexandria — airport logistics, some light industry, and the gateway to North Coast summer resorts. The social scene is seasonal; peak summer brings the resort crowd which is worth engaging, but the rest of the year it's quiet. Worth knowing about if you're here in summer.
Lower score (below 6)
Outside of summer resort season, Burg el Arab has nothing for a foreign man socially. It's a mid-sized Egyptian city with conservative norms and no tourism infrastructure. The airport is the reason most foreigners see this place at all, and that's how it should stay.
