El Raml is the social and commercial spine of central Alexandria — the old Cecil Hotel (where Churchill and Monty stayed during the North Africa campaign) anchors Saad Zaghloul Square, and the Corniche cafes along here are where Alexandria's young educated crowd actually congregates. A foreign man with presence does well in this part of the city; the area has always been more outward-facing than the rest of Alexandria due to its role as the historic meeting point between European and Egyptian culture. The waterfront cafe strip is the place to be seen.
