Tanta is the capital of Gharbia Governorate and the most functional city in the Delta outside Cairo — Tanta University pulls in students from across the region, which creates a younger, slightly more open demographic than the surrounding towns. The annual Moulid of Ahmad al-Badawi draws millions and is one of the largest religious festivals in the Muslim world, so mass gatherings are part of the local DNA. As a foreigner you will get attention fast because international faces are genuinely rare here.
