Safaga is the windiest point on the Egyptian Red Sea, which has turned it into a legitimate windsurfing destination — the Lotus Bay area regularly attracts serious European windsurfers, and that community has its own social life separate from the package-holiday circuit. If you windsurf or kitesurf, you're arriving into a peer group, not as a tourist. The diving is also excellent and less crowded than Hurghada. Foreign men with an active water-sports identity do better here than they would in most Egyptian cities.
