Montecristi is the actual origin point of what the world incorrectly calls Panama hats — the finest superfino toquilla hats in existence are woven here, with the best ones taking months to complete and selling for thousands of dollars internationally. The town sits at the foot of Cerro Montecristi and is also the birthplace of Eloy Alfaro, Ecuador's most significant 19th-century president. It's a historic artisan village with genuine cultural weight but virtually no nightlife or social scene — you can spend a morning visiting the hat workshops and Alfaro museum and you've seen what there is. Worth a half-day from Manta; not worth staying.
