Playas (officially General Villamil) is the closest Pacific beach to Guayaquil and draws a consistent crowd of middle-class coast dwellers on weekends and holidays. The relaxed beach setting drops social formality significantly compared to the city, and the mix of visitors creates an environment where foreign men stand out in a useful way. Prices are cheap even by Ecuadorian standards, and the low-key malecón has enough food and drink options to create natural social situations. Weekends during the coastal summer (December–April) are when this place genuinely delivers.
