Penipe is a small canton on the flanks of the Tungurahua and El Altar volcanoes, and the dramatic Andean landscape is its primary asset — El Altar is considered one of the most beautiful mountains in Ecuador and serious trekkers come specifically for it. The canton was severely affected by Tungurahua's eruptions in the early 2000s, which displaced much of the population and reshaped the local economy around recovery and limited agro-tourism. As a foreign man, you'd be arriving as a trekker or nature tourist, which is one of the better social framings in a rural Andean context.
