Guano is well known in Ecuador for its artisan production of rugs, tapestries, and leather goods — the main street is lined with workshops and small shops, and Ecuadorians from Riobamba come out on weekends specifically to buy. That weekend traffic creates more social energy than most towns of its size (around 18,000) would normally have. As a foreign man you'd be one of very few non-Ecuadorians here, which creates immediate curiosity in a town that's at least accustomed to outside visitors, even if most are domestic. The proximity to Riobamba (12km) also means you're never stuck if you need more options.

Guano functions primarily as a day-trip artisan destination from Riobamba, and on weekdays it's a quiet, mid-sized Andean town with more craft shops than nightlife. The population is mostly mestizo, which makes it more socially accessible than the heavily indigenous cantons nearby, and there's a decent plaza area where local life happens in the evenings. A foreign man will draw some attention here but the social ceiling is low — there's maybe one or two bars, and the evening wind-down is early. Good for a day visit, manageable for a night or two.

The weekend energy from Riobamba shoppers dies completely on weeknights, and you're left with a quiet highland town where nothing much happens after dinner. Come to shop for a rug, head back to Riobamba for everything else.
