Cumandá sits at the bottom of the western Andean slope, in a semi-tropical zone that makes it feel completely different from the cold highlands above — the heat, the bananas and sugarcane, and the more mixed coastal-highland population give it a noticeably looser social atmosphere than most of Chimborazo province. It's small (around 13,000 people) but positioned on the road between Riobamba and Guayaquil, which means it sees genuine transit commerce. For a foreign man this is one of the more approachable towns in the province — the vibe is warmer and the coastal cultural influence softens some of the Andean reserve.
