Paute is a mid-sized town in the Paute River valley known for producing some of Ecuador's best flowers and fruit, and the agricultural prosperity here gives it slightly more economic energy than typical rural Azuay towns. The town has a real plaza, a few restaurants, and a small weekend scene that draws people from surrounding cantons. Paute's flower industry employs a significant number of women, which creates a working female population that's less isolated than in purely agricultural towns. An hour from Cuenca, it's accessible enough to visit repeatedly without committing to rural life.
